This session will explore the complex landscape of privacy within higher education, emphasizing universal lessons learned about PETs and privacy programs through the lens of universities with operations and infrastructure the size and complexity of a small city - including healthcare, finance, and defense contracting. 

This session will detail best practices and considerations when developing, procuring, and deploying Privacy-Enhancing Technologies (PETs). Proper governance, accountability mechanisms, and vendor management are all key to the responsible adoption of PETs, yet few companies have experience developing robust procedures for managing an inventory of PETs. The FTC has already opined in a blog about potential future enforcement actions where companies could mismanage PETs, particularly concerning multi-party computations. We hope to provide an in-depth discussion of PETs governance to spur the thoughtful adoption of in-house and third-party accountability procedures so that companies understand how to leverage these nascent technologies without risking further regulatory scrutiny.

Our access to data and our ability to process it, including with AI, are growing by the week. But at the same time, there is increasing concern about personal data - both from regulators (new laws are rapidly coming up in various countries) and from people - a strong cultural shift in society. How can organizations - particularly those that work in or with multiple countries - deal with the challenge of these conflicting dynamics, and turn it into an opportunity?

This session will focus on exploring solutions for cross-border data transfer and data anonymization use cases. The importance of working together and sharing information to enhance efficiency and uncover untapped opportunities cannot be overstated. However, data is often kept isolated and restricted in order to prevent it from being compromised and to comply with various regulations.

Industry professionals will share their experiences on how they have improved collaboration both within their organisations and with external partners. They will also discuss the challenges they have faced and how they have overcome them, as well as the potential for partnerships created by PETs.
